Stephen was born and educated in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, trained in Law and studied at the Royal College of Music for five years winning many prizes together with an award for advanced vocal studies. He made his South Bank debut with a performance of Bach’s ST MATTHEW PASSION at the Royal Festival Hall conducted by Sir David Willcocks.
His West End credits includes the original London cast of SWEENEY TODD at Drury Lane, JEEVES TAKES CHARGE at the Fortune Theatre and CATS at the New London Theatre, where he was also Production Vocal Director for 12 years. For many years he directed his vocal group THE STEPHEN HILL SINGERS making frequent recordings for radio, television and films. Their work ranging from a DUKE ELLINGTON album with Johnny Mathis to the soundtracks of Kenneth Branagh’s blockbuster HENRY V. and CITY OF JOY (with Patrick Swayze). They also recorded the RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL CHRISTMAS ALBUM for Sony and appeared in the Victoria Wood AS SEEN ON TV series.
They also appeared on several Royal Variety and Children’s Royal Variety Shows, and were the backbone for the BBC Radio2 series of Musicals in which Stephen appeared in all 24 of them. His most notable credits include The Caliph in KISMET, Mr Erlanson in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, Harry in MY FAIR LADY, Peter in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, , Larry in A CHORUS LINE and Roscoe in Stephen Sondheim’s FOLLIES which was recorded live at Drury Lane in the presence of the Composer, who acclaimed Stephen as “the definitive Roscoe!”
Much in demand as a vocal coach, director and arranger Stephen is Choral Director of the Music Theatre Degree Course at the Royal Academy of Music. He was Choral Director for Elton John’s Concerts at the Royal Opera House in 2000, as well as the 2004 UK Tour and the performances at Radio City, New York working closely on the concept with conductor James Newton Howard and arranger Brad Dechter.
Visitors to Disneyland Paris can hear Stephen as one of the six featured vocalists in the new parade show ONCE UPON A DREAM. Stephen conducted one of the concerts at the re-opening of the Royal Festival Hall in 2007; also conducting the 258-strong choir at the Falklands Commemoration from Horseguards Parade live on National TV and was guest soloist for the RAF Massed Bands Tour. He also conducted the Elton John sequence of the PRINCESS DIANA CONCERT at Wembley and was recently awarded an Hon RAM degree and also conducted a performance for HM The Queen.
2008 began with Stephen singing at the opening of Heathrow Terminal 5 for HM The Queen and visiting Israel for workshops in both Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Summer concerts with Leslie Garrett and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 60th Birthday Gala were followed by work on the new film version of NINE and then as guest soloist, again, with the Royal Air Force Massed Bands UK Tour.
Stephen conducted the Elton John Gala in aid of the RAM at the Royal Albert Hall and also directed the musical sequence for Stephen Sondheim’s Doctorate Ceremony on 15th October. Last year found him working on the forthcoming film SONG FOR MARION with Vanessa Redgrave and Terence Stamp, the RSC 50th Birthday Gala and a special concert to celebrate the 25th Birthday of THE LEGEND OF ZELDA!!
Stephen recently donated his time to record the choir track on Tony Christie’s single STEAL THE SUN in aid of the Afghan Heroes Charity.
Summer of 2014 will see Stephen as adjudicator of both The Musical Theatre Solo and the Glee Choir Competitions at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.
